Richard Levine’s slice of life family drama screened at New Yorks’ Tribeca film festival in April, 2010 and turned out to be well worth the screening time. The film addresses the challenges of raising the modern day family in a bold and unvarnished manner. The gay teenage son, alone, presents a challenge that would kill most parents. Not to mention the crippled, bitter, emotionally feckless father-in-law and the brainless boss at work. Put all these elements together and Liev Schreiber’s character, Ned, would be happy to die in his sleep.
As it turns out, he doesn’t die in his sleep and we are glad of it because the stage is set for a heroic lesson in parenthood and death is cheating. Helen Hunt plays Jeannie, who, along with Ned, is trying to raise a family in modern times. Very modern times. Brian Dennehy plays Ernie, the in-law from hell. Ernie is, at the same time, touching and alienating. He is the curmudgeon with a heart of gold. A man with a love of music, we come to understand that he never had the time and/or the talent to pursue his dream. As a result, his dreams come out of a bottle of Scotch and he transforms from a big band star to a collapsed, crippled drunk before our eyes.
Therefore, this is no comedy. However, even as grandpa is killing himself in the presence of the family, gay son Jonah is coming alive, and fast. The story interweaves first his request for permission to attend the gay prom and then his date with an older gay man, two circumstances that would stress the bonds of any family.
Grandpa has failed to live his dream, or even try for it, but his failure is to some degree based in his love and devotion to his family. Without his grandfather’s diligence, Ethan might not be alive to see his opportunity to pursue his true sexuality. This is one of the intriguing paradoxes of the film. It becomes impossible to blame Grandpa Ernie in spite of his hopeless behavior, just as it is impossible to blame Jonah Ezra Miller for his.
