Utterly destroyed by her savage killing finding out who committed the crime is just the beginning, he wants to make Kyung-chul suffer for what he has done. But can he really get the better of the psychopath without becoming a monster himself?
Most audiences are somewhat shell shocked by the brutal opening, with the shocking murder of Joo-yeon, but lucky the film doesn’t keep that level of intensity or it might be almost unwatchable. Instead Jee-woon drops into a fast-paced and bizarre cat and mouse game between the pair in what director describes as a ‘gore thriller’.
In South Korea the film rather lost out to the Won Bin action thriller by Lee Jeong-beom, The Man From Nowhere, by being released at the same time, not to mention the controversies thrown up the Korean Media Rating Board who required him to make two rounds of cuts in order to get the film released.
But whatever you might be expecting from the press – and there is no doubt that the horror is quite grizzly – it’s not as bad as, say, a Hostel-type horror.
Right from the opening titles I was reminded of what Jee-woon had told me when I interviewed him for the release of The Good, The Bad, The Weird, that he’d been knocked out by the Coen brothers No Country For Old Men and David Fincher’s Zodiac. The shots of the deserted road reminded me of the darker Coen thrillers, like No Country and Blood Simple, there’s something about how desolate they make the landscape feel, and how brooding the surroundings become.
There’s no doubt Jee-woon pays reference to previous serial killer movies – Choi Min-sik’s flamboyant and passionate performance could be said to be reminiscent of Anthony Hopkins in Silence Of The Lambs though it’s far, far better, and in the final real when he gives himself up to the police may recall Fincher’s Seven – but Jee-woon quickly diverts comparisons by using a narrative that continually exceeds and subverts audiences expectations. In an ironic dark reflection of Lee Jeong-beom’s film, the pace is also as fast, with Jee-woon wasting little time for us to get to know, or even truly sympathise with Lee Byung-hun’s character.
