“Secret Sunshine” is a film about religion rather than a religious one as such, with Lee depicting Christianity from the perspective of an outsider. Firstly treated as an alien annoyance, with people clapping, singing and howling at the sky, the religion is tackled in brave, open fashion, asking difficult questions, beginning with the old chestnut as to why God allows terrible things to happen. Even more searching issues are explored as the film progresses, as Shin Ae’s Christian rebirth essentially sees her using the religion as a crutch. This period of the film is particularly challenging, as her conversion whilst perhaps understandable given the circumstances distances her from the viewer and comes as a shock. The facts: Guantanamo Bay, Cuba – Gitmo as it is known – based marines Lance Corporal Harold Dawson and Private Louden Downey assaulted Private William Santiago in the middle of the night, which included stuffing a rag into his mouth, Santiago who died shortly thereafter of respiratory complications. Special Judge Advocate Counsel Lieutenant Joanne Galloway believes Dawson and Downey were just following orders, as part of the marine’s unofficial “code red” where there is self policing within the ranks, and that there was no intent of murder. Galloway, a naive lawyer who seeks fairness and justice at all cost, wants to be assigned the case but she has no trial experience. Instead, the military assigns Lieutenant Daniel Kaffee to be Dawson and Downey’s counsel.

Kaffee is a lightweight lawyer who also has no trial experience and has a history of taking, as Galloway refers, the path of least resistance by plea bargaining regardless of his clients’ guilt/innocence and their wants. Galloway becomes co-counsel in the case. The two, with their assistant Lieutenant Sam Weinberg, have to decide what to do, not an easy task considering their differing views on law and what is best for all including themselves. They do believe Dawson and Downey’s story that they were following unofficial/official code red orders, but are uncertain if their case is winnable, especially against the marine machine run by Gitmo’s Colonel

I like Cavanagh in this role and I think he will interact well with the three CG bears. I know it’s not much to live up to, but he needs to be as good as Jason Lee was in Alvin and the Chipmunks.

Like in 2008′s Let the Right One In, there is a deep sadness wafting through the film, an implication that these creatures are the last of their kind, a cuththroat order of primate facing extinction as modernity encroaches into their territory.

There’s no real theme to any of my favorite parts of these movies. Well except for maybe the John Williams score – particularly for the Darth Vader Vs Luke Skywalker lightsaber duel in Jedi and the millennium Falcon asteroid chase in Empire. The cinematography and score for these scenes set them apart from most others because every element worked so well. These scenes are embedded in my memory in a way that new movies failed to.

It’s not that the new movies only Lucas would release prequels last eh? are lacking in amazing scenes – I’ve listed some of my favorites ones already. But the older movies relied more on atmosphere and shooting the scene properly than just throwing in a load of special effects to overload your brain! It’s when movie making was more of a craft and when less definitely did more.
